Welcome to our Grand Rounds for the nonprofit Gymnastics Medicine: Education and Research

Topic: Female Athlete Triad: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) in a Gymnast.

Target audience: Gymnasts, parents, coaches and medical providers

Description: Join our multidisciplinary team of Gymnastics Medicine experts as we explore and explain a gymnast with Female Athlete Triad: RED-S!

In 1997 “Female Athlete Triad” was described as a female athlete with disordered eating, irregular menstrual cycles (amenorrhea), and poor bone health (osteoporosis). This was then further investigated and in 2007 it was discovered that there were more than 3 factors which lead to this condition/ outcome and thus the International Olympic Committee (IOC) described “Female Athlete Triad: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)”.

RED-S is described as “inadequacy of energy to support the range of body functions involved in optimal health and performance” (1).  Join our team as we break down what is RED-S, the signs/symptoms, screening tools, treatment, and why is it important to understand in our gymnasts!
